Toddler Alphabet – Letter F: Round 2

Letter: F

Memory Passage: Ephesians 6:10-17

Bible Story: Loaves and fishes.  We will tell the story and put fish and loaves in a basket (paper). Here is the template I used.

Sensory Bin: I am going to try doing sensory bins again, however I think I’m going to make them outdoor bins.  We’ll see how it goes.

This week the base of the sensory bin will be flour.  I will add other things that start with F like a fork and a funnel.  We’ll see what else ends up in there.

Monday – “Pick” fruit on an orchard hunt.

Tuesday – Grow a flower. Plant a seed and begin watering it daily. (Samuel will get to use his spray bottle to water it.  He LOVES spraying things!)

Wednesday – Make/play with the sensory bin.

Thursday – Find Frogs. We will go on a hunt to look for frogs.  We may even try to catch and grow a tadpole. 🙂

Friday – Felt button snake

Sunday – Paint pictures of fruit with scented Fruity Finger paint while listening to this Fruit of the Spirit song.

Monday – Bathtub fishing for alphabet fish.  I wanted to do this last week when we studied A (alphabet), but we didn’t get around to it.  This week I want to do alphabet fishing in the bathtub.

Tuesday – Hike in the forest. That’s right, we might even go . . . off the trials! O_0

Wednesday – Play with items in the water to see if they sink or float.

Thursday – Go to a local nursery and look at flowers.

Friday – Look at a book with pictures of Family.

Sunday – Spray Painting.  Ok, so this has NOTHING to do with the letter F, but I found this idea, and Samuel would just love it, so I couldn’t resist.

More letter F activities.

Memory Passage: Psalm 95

Bible Story: Creation with a focus on Animals.  We can sing the song: “Animals, Animals, Jesus made the animals. Great big animals, little tiny animals – here is an animal that I know”

Toys: I have GREATLY reduced the number of toys Samuel has out.  There were just too many.  I still feel like he has too many, but I’m going to keep working to whittle them down. I will make sure he has his Animal Sounds Puzzle.

I am not one for electronic toys, but I found a really neat animal sounds app for my iphone that has photographs of the animal and the sound it makes.  We might pull this out every once in a while too.

MondayAnt hunt.  We will look at ants with Samuel’s magnifying glass. We will also look at an ant book I made for Samuel.

I can’t share the images with you because I do not have copyright permission, but here is a PDF link to the words. You can do a quick google search to add your own pictures (or if your toddler is old enough, let him/her draw the pictures.) Print front and back, short edged binding and fold in half.

Tuesday Artist’s Tub

WednesdayAlphabet fishing.  I would like to make a set like this, but if I don’t get around to it, the letters for the fridge phonics are magnetic (of course). We will put them in a container and have fun fishing for the letters. Or, if it’s hot and a nice day to go outside, we might try this version.

ThursdayMake the Alphabet out of clay using this recipe.

Friday – Apple Printing:  more Apple activities

SundayAnimal Safari go outside and see how many animals we can find.  I’ll take pictures of as many as I can, and print them out so Samuel can look at them later.

MondayAnimal Hunt: Place stuffed animals all around the room and sing “Shall We Go for a Walk Today? Shall we go for a walk today and see what God has given?” and hunt for all the animals.  Do it a second time, walking over pillows and “hills.” We can try running and crawling, jumping and hoping.  (We can even do this outside.)

TuesdayPlay with Aurora (Samuel’s cousin)

Wednesday – Alphabet Hunt – using the letters we made out of clay

ThursdayGo to the Zoo to see animals

Friday – Make Animals out of clay. (We will use the same recipe from above. We have lots of animal cookie cutters and can use those.)

Sunday – Alphabet Stones

As you can see, I’ve added Sunday to the schedule.  I don’t always plan to do an activity with Samuel on Sunday, but there are many times I wish I had something planned, so I’m planning something. 🙂

Memory Passage: Psalm 23

Bible Story: Samuel – Read the story “Happy Hannah” and sing a song about Samuel.

Shape: Triangle | Number: 4 |Color: Blue
We won’t have focused learning time for colors, shapes and numbers, but I will make signs of these and go out of my way to point them out as we see them day-to-day.

Toys: Stick counting, shape sorter, toys Samuel hasn’t seen in a while.

Sensory Tub Theme: We are keeping out the Marble Works instead of having a sensory tub.

Monday – Play with the sticker book. Samuel has a sticker book that he LOVES.

Tuesday – Spin Art.  This will be oodles of fun! I got this idea from Juggling With Kids.

Wednesday –  Play in the sand at the park.

Thursday – Stick Play.  We will go outside with a big bag and gather sticks.  We may play with them while we are out, or we may wait until we get home. I wonder what all we will do with our sticks. 🙂

Friday – Stick Counting. I will leave this activity out for him to play with, and will probably only go up to number five. Samuel has been really trying to count and we can use the sticks from Thursday. 🙂

Monday – Make and play with Sponge Balls.

Tuesday – Shape Hop – Samuel loves running around and jumping.  I will put some masking tape shapes on the floor and we will play in them.  I’m not sure how it will work, but we may hide on the circle or find as many squares as we can to put in the square.

Wednesday – Stone Splashing – OK, so we do this a lot already, but Samuel LOVES splashing stones in a nearby creek. 🙂

Thursday – Go to the park and play on the slide.

Friday – Read lots of stories and sing lots of songs!

More letter S activities.

Memory Passage: Psalm 30

Bible Story: Baby Moses – Tell the story of baby Moses with felts.  One of my good friends lives with us and she knows a great song about Baby Moses in Spanish.  I will try to learn it with Samuel and we can sing it as we tell the story with felts.

Shape: Square | Number: 4 |Color: Green

We won’t have focused learning time for colors, shapes and numbers, but I will make signs of these and go out of my way to point them out as we see them day-to-day.

Toys: Marble track, money and piggy bank, magnifying glass, mittens (samuel loves to take these on and off, moon

Monday – Nature Match. Go on a hike and gather things and match them together.  We can match colors on colored paper plates when we get home or, we can match like things (i.e. stones, leaves, flowers, etc.)

Tuesday – Color with markers.

Wednesday –  Measuring walk. Take the measuring tape with us on a hike and let Samuel measure anything he finds. (He really likes playing with the measuring tape, but everything is “40 . . .50.” I’m not sure what unit he’s using, but it’s awful cute (click for video of Samuel measuring).

Thursday – Build a marble track. (Of course, all use of marbles will be supervised, although Samuel is REALLY good about not putting things in his mouth).

Friday – Sing and dance to music. We will play some instruments too.

Monday – Mix water and dirt and make mud pies.

Tuesday – Marshmallow paintings. Check out how here.

Wednesday – Magnifying glass hunt.  Here’s a fun chance to see so many things in a new way. 🙂 Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can go outside, but we could have fun with this inside too.

Thursday – Put money in the piggy bank.  This will be a great fine motor activity to do with Samuel.

Friday – Play with the sensory tub from last time.

Toddler Alphabet – Letter B: Round 2

I decided I would leave the last few letters off for Samuel right now x, y and z.  They are not as prevalent of letters, and I would like to focus on letters and sounds Samuel can really work on.  This second time around, I’m adjusting things a bit to compensate for Samuel’s age and abilities.  One of the biggest changes is that . . . gasp . . .  I will not be going through the alphabet in order.  I’m going to introduce sounds that are easier to make and that he makes well and slowly go through other sounds.

I am also focusing in general on a more child-led form of learning for this age.  I will likely have a letter, number, shape and color that we work on with a two-week rotation rather than a one-week rotation.

I am also going to focus more on learning larger chunks of scripture along with Samuel.  We will still enjoy and review all of the scriptures/scripture songs we’ve learned, but I think learning things in context and starting young is so valuable.

I do have activities planned out for certain days, but I by no means feel I have to stick to those days.  I switch things around based on weather, other things that might be happening that day and so-0n.

I am transitioning out the mystery box, but am excited to see how things unfold. 🙂

Letter: B

Memory Passage: Psalm 1

Bible Story: Noah and the BIG Boat – Sing/read the story of Noah’s ark together during worship at breakfast or first thing during our learning time. I can let Samuel hammer on a toy boat while we sing and look at pictures.

Shape: Circle | Number: 3 |Color: Brown
We won’t have focused learning time for colors, shapes and numbers, but I will make signs of these and go out of my way to point them out as we see them day-to-day.

Toys: basket of balls, blocks, bug puzzle, color sorting game, coloring pages with the letter B, bird flashcards, bird beginner tangrams, bead maze

Sensory Tub Theme: Circles

Monday – Go to the library to check out books about birds, bugs and butterflies.  While we are out, play at the park some and maybe read some of the books when we get home.

Tuesday – Play with balls.  We can roll balls around inside, throw a ball outside, or play T-ball with ball and bat in the yard.  Samuel can lead, but we will focus on playing with balls.

Wednesday –  All about Birds – Read some bird books from the library, make bird feeders and go outside to watch for birds.  I will put bird flashcards out with Samuel’s toys for him to look at.

Thursday – Make a Cheerio bird feeder by stringing cheerios on a string and hanging it outside.  This is a great fine motor activity that I may leave out for Samuel to play with. Spend more time reading about and watching birds.

Friday – Build with blocks (either outside or inside)

Monday – Spend extra time playing with the sensory tub today.

Tuesday – Read bug books outside and look for bugs. Catch some in a bug jar to watch.

Wednesday – Play with bug puzzle and crawl around like bugs

Thursday – Blow Bubbles

Friday – Water play with boats

Memory verse for the week: “Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You.” Psalm 56:3 This week’s memory verse song.

New Toy: I’m leaving out a coloring book and crayons.  I’m not sure how he’ll do with the crayons, but he LOVES to color!

Mystery Box Items (choose 5 – one for each day): whisk, wheel, wool, wrench, woman, things that are white

Daily Story/Activity: (This is what we do to start our “learning time” each day) Tell and act out the story of Jonah and the whale.

Sing a couple songs, look at letter of the week. Set aside aprox. 15 mins to read as many books as Samuel wants. After doing daily activities, if Samuel needs other things to do, here are some options:

Go for a walk, blow bubbles, color in coloring book, play dough, water play, sing “Head and Shoulders, Knees and Toes”, stack pots and pans or bowls, play with balls, finger painting, water painting, get out sensory tub, dig in the garden

Monday – LeapFrog Fridge Phonics (each week I will put a different letter in the fridge phonics toy. I don’t usually like electronic toys, but Samuel loves putting the letter in this one and pressing the button. I’m starting to give him two letters at a time – last week’s and the new one.) We will look at the new toys set out and play with them together.

TuesdayWade in the creek near our house.

Wednesday – Go for a walk and hunt for spider webs.

Thursday –  Play What to Wear?  Samuel has been super interested in trying to dress and undress himself.  I plan on setting out some clothes that are a size or two too big so he can practice trying to put them on and take them off.

Friday – Paint the windows with watercolor paints. We have a big window on one of our doors that he can reach.  I’ll let him paint on it with his watercolors.  Cleanup is really easy. 🙂

Extra activities:

Wash – Anything! The car, his toys, you name it.
Water Play – Get a big tub or bowl full of water and let Samuel have fun outside or inside.

Toddler Homeschool Letter V Activities

Letter of the week: V

Memory verse for the week: “I am the vine; you are the branches, if you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.” John 15:5

New Toy: We cut back on toys even more this week.  His current toys that are out: vacuum, workbench, tricycle thing, farm puzzle, stacker toy, pound and roll tower, rock pouring and scooping activity, building blocks, alphabet blocks, books and treasure box (including matchbox cars). WOW!  That still seems like too many toys huh?

Mystery Box Items (choose 5 – one for each day): No mystery box this week.

Daily Story/Activity: (This is what we do to start our “learning time” each day) Talk about Jesus as the vine and us as the branches and what that means

sing a couple songs, look at letter of the day.

Tuesday – Learn about volcanos. I made a SUPER basic volcano book by searching for pictures of volcanos on google, and explaining what they are. (i.e. This is a volcano.  Watch the lava run out of the volcano. etc).  We will also make a VERY simple volcano with a cup and dirt and watch it erupt with vinegar and baking soda.

Wednesday – Listen to violin music and have Daddy show his violin.

Thursday –  Play with velcro.  I haven’t decided if I will make an apple tree for him to pick apples off and put them back on with velcro, or if I will put velcro on stones or sticks for him to stick together and build things with.  hmmm.

Friday – I’ve been working on a vegetable alphabet books with pictures I’ve cut out from a seed catalog.  I will try to finish it by Friday so we can read our vegetable ABC book together.

I thought V would be a boring letter, but I’m rather excited about this week! 😀
